Meet the winemaker:
Jonathan Wheeler
Jonathan Wheeler, Head Winemaker at Trump Winery, is preparing to celebrate his 20th harvest at the estate, marking two decades dedicated to the vineyards, wines, and evolving story of Virginia’s Monticello wine region.
Since joining the estate in 2006, Jonathan has helped shape Trump Winery’s winemaking program, overseeing the production of its sparkling, white, and red wines. His approach combines a deep understanding of the estate’s vineyards with a commitment to balance, precision, and allowing each vintage to express the character of the Monticello terroir.
Before arriving in Virginia, Jonathan gained winemaking experience in several renowned wine regions, including Sonoma, Monterey, New Zealand’s Marlborough region, and the Finger Lakes. He holds a B.A. in Chemistry from SUNY Oswego and is a member of Virginia’s Winemaker’s Research Exchange, where collaboration and experimentation help advance winemaking throughout the Commonwealth.
Over 20 harvests, Jonathan has developed an intimate understanding of the estate and the nuances of growing wine in Virginia. His wines have earned numerous accolades and 90+ point scores, while his longstanding commitment to the craft reflects the quality, character, and continued promise of the Monticello AVA.
